边境牧羊犬打小就聪明，学习能力超级强，一个动作训练几遍就能完全记住，而且还能学会做简单的算术题，不仅能听懂人类语言，还能察言观色。边牧动手能力还很强，不仅能帮主人拿东西，还能自己开房门跑出去玩，另外，边牧天生就会放羊。据说边牧的智商相当于普通五岁小孩，有些甚至达到普通8岁小孩的智商。
